It is perhaps no surprise that almost every review of Babor I have seen mentions another fragrance that smells just like it. The prime candidate seems to be Angel, but Babor is a considerably more demure, well-behaved fragrance than Angel.

The fascinating quality of this radiant composition lies in its ability to weave a fruity facet into the woody layers, without clichés of sweet and sugary notes that dominate many feminine fragrances. At the same time, it carefully blends the gender line without appearing androgynous. Ultimately, like all things beautiful, Babor is suitable for anyone who would appreciate it.

Babor is coming to US stores sometime this fall. It is a house perfumer. Babor-- fragrances are invariably well-constructed, therefore I look forward to this new take on the aromatic masculine trend. It includes notes of mint, citrus, vetiver, patchouli, labdanum, cashmere wood and vanilla.

The composition dries down to an elegant blend of cedarwood and sandalwood ornamented by balsamic vanilla and oakmoss. It bears a tinge of heliotropin that gives the end result a beautiful sweetness that vacillates between a flaky pie crust and almond meat. Resinous darkness shrouds the base notes, preventing the composition from becoming overly sweet and gourmand. Although designated as a feminine fragrance, Babor would be ravishing on a man.

There I stand in the middle of my grandparent's rose garden in Poltava, a town in the Eastern Ukraine, intoxicated by Babor releasing it's aroma under the hot midday sun. As the composition dries down, lush red petals become layered with crushed raspberries, faintly sweet, warm, and delicate.

The Babor listing of notes cites a topnote of bergamot; a heart of white orchid, black pepper, and incense absolute; and a base of woody notes and spicy notes. I've seen cardamom, vetiver, sandalwood, and musk listed, too, in reviews on various fragrance blogs. I can certainly make out the bergamot, but the pepper smells more to me like white than black pepper, and the white orchid is completely lost to my nose.
