Birdie Fragrance, Air Freshner, Perfume Scents, Cream Body Wash

Birdie's collection sounds like it could be fascinating, a fragrance trio paying tribute to the Hollywood star of its Golden Age. My Dream is a classical floral perfume; My Life is a chypre; My Passion is a floral oriental.

Birdie opens with citrus (rather sharp for a few minutes) and watery fresh notes tinged with green (the notes: dew drops, bergamot, black currant leaves, paperwhite narcissus, honeysuckle, lavender musk, cedar, iris). The heart is blended floral notes, very fresh and crisp and green, and the lavender, while soft, adds a bit of interest (and shades of the au courant "touch of masculine") in the dry down. It gets just slightly powdery at the end — is powder obligatory for brides? — and while it has a more modern, less resolutely bridal feel than the original Birdie scent, it doesn't really stray from the "romantic and feminine" comfort zone. It is about the last thing I'd think to put on the bride in the picture, who I can imagine spraying on Guerlain Jicky and then knocking back a few at the reception.

While I do not envision the street leading to a Nubian village where Birdie discovered the mangos that inspired him, I am reminded of heavy clusters of fruit hanging from mango trees in India. Where one association does not resurface, a score of others are eager to take its place. I would also note that this fragrance is composed to blur masculine/feminine divisions, without being a typically conventional androgynous creation.

Were it not for the metallic freshness, the fragrance would have dried down to the same dense richness that marks Birdie In Metalys, the classical Guerlain vanilla has enough darkness from the shadows filling the base accord to render it abstractly gourmand rather than candy-sweet. Illuminated by the transparent woody amber, its velvety veil attains a thin cashmere quality.
