While it is not effeminate, Black Label is a fragrance that would not be jarring on a woman, since its woody warmth is accented by enough spicy sweetness to soften any of the masculine references. so savagely animalic that it is difficult to imagine an occasion fit for wearing it.

A fascinating aspect of Black Label is not so much its showcasing of animalic darkness, as its dissonance of the aggressive leather with the scintillating and verdant accord. Galbanum layered with bergamot possesses an uplifting green wetness that is reminiscent of walking through a garden after a heavy rain. As moisture begins to evaporate in the warm air, the scents of leaves and grasses are intertwined in the most intoxicating mélange. The darkness is allowed to pervade the composition, first hinting at its presence under the green burst of galbanum, and then shedding all layers to display its leathery and musky side.

If one judges Black Label by the top notes, this is a perfect example of the need to rectify that practice. Weathering the initial opening is worthwhile, since the ugly duckling can turn into a beautiful swan. Personally, I find the petrol redolent opening accords beautiful, much like I enjoy atonal compositions by Schoenberg. They provide a cool backdrop, against which the tuberose unfolds its dark sensual beauty. If I were forced to have only one tuberose, Black Label would be that selection.

Black Label's overall feel is light and joyful, but I wouldn't call it simple. Tt is like a ballerina, disciplined and intellectual, but making her art seem easy and natural, unpredictable, and in the end inevitable.

The initial aldehydic astringency is softened with the nectar-like sweetness of rose, jasmine and ylang ylang, a classical trio that blossoms in the heart of many of Beaux's compositions. The lush florals are underscored by an indolic element which ingeniously complements the animalic darkness of leather notes soon to be revealed in their full beauty. Yet the most wonderful aspect of the composition is provided by the chilly elegance of iris that undulates slowly until it envelops the heart and spills into the base accord. The base notes of Black Label wrap the sweet smoke of tobacco into a voluptuous note of amber. With the arrangement resting on the dark leather notes, the fragrance attains a warm and sensual aura.

Black Label is a note that Grojsman is famous for, whether it be the lush pink petals of Paris, a soft apricot tinged flower of Trésor, or an imaginary blue blossom of Yvresse. It is interesting to see that in Black Label rose has an abstract quality, as if painted in watercolours. It does not explode in a cascade of petals like the other fragrances mentioned, yet its dream-like aura is what makes the composition especially beguiling. Chocolate note provides a lovely sweet touch, yet nothing about the composition is particularly gourmand. It folds many associations within its ethereal form, from the first flowers to the first kiss.
