Rose soufflé with fruit salad, Boucheron is a rose fragrance for those who think that rose is sentimental and hopelessly romantic. Boucheron is anything but sentimental. It is effervescent and vivid, in its explosion of melon and apple against the backdrop of yellow rose and honeyed flowers accord. It is exuberant, and almost too much so, veering into syrupy and cloying. The resulting outcome is a disconcerting vacillation between roses heated by the sun and a rose jam. While the latter is delicious, after a couple of bites the feeling of overindulgence sets in. The same takes place with Boucheron — while I enjoy the rose soufflé accords at first, an hour later they begin to irritate me with their sugariness.

If the honeyed sweetness is usually to anticipated, this composition is saturated with the leathery dryness. Like subtle gradations of, the unfolding quality of Boucheron leads one from the transparent darkness of rose liquor to the deep shadows of its ambery base.

Each of us has our own unique odor identity which is the sum total of our heredity (genes), skin type (dry/oily/light/dark), hair color, diet, whether or not we take medications, are under stress, the environment in which we live, etc.

After the initial sparkle of honeysuckle, jasmine begins to emerge, growing louder and louder, until it suddenly folds into a foam of tuberose and narcissus, underscored by a slightly powdery iris. This displays Boucheron very beautifully. It is a delicate juxtaposition of elegance and nostalgia that draws me back.

My initial impressions are of Boucheron, a collection of dried out blossoms carefully stored in heavy paper. Tinge of mustiness pervades the entire composition, and although not a negative quality in itself, it drowns out the delicacy of the composition. On my skin, I cannot detect the dew-drenched florals I expected, and only in the parfum strength can I note the jasmine, tuberose and a hint of honey.

The scent of Boucheron has autumnal associations given its nutty plumminess reminiscent of fallen leaves, its smoky dryness evoking bonfires and its intoxicating tangy sweetness conjuring the aroma of spiced wine. I do not know why a fragrance inspired by Italian woods would evoke an image of Ukrainian rainy autumns, but for me this fact is undeniable.
