The composition has a warm silky quality, with the rose toned down by the violet woodiness to a gentle whisper. The vegetal element persists into the drydown, foiling the honeyed sweetness and earthiness of the base. Rose Gemme is a soft fragrance that will not announce its presence to the whole room, even though it will delicately caresses its wearer.

The beauty of Gemme, created by the perfumer in its abstraction of a delicate blossom into a nocturnal animalic scent, as if the petals slowly transform into the warm skin. Every single quality one might expect of rose—sweetness, powderiness, brightness, is twisted into its opposite. Where the roses might evoke delicate softness, Rose de Nuit sheds dark petals, withered at the edges.

When the finest oils and essences are hand blended with deep knowledge, intention, skill, light and love, nothing short of artistry is the end result.

It should be fairly obvious by now with Gemme that I have a predilection for white florals, however since I have sampled a wide range of them, finding something that captures my attention is becoming more difficult. Number One remains a favourite for its mellifluous blend of white blossoms.

Gemme sensually earthy green notes lace the heart of hyacinth and jasmine and render these ordinarily heady floral chords filigree-like. While the top notes create an impression of an ice sculpture under the intense sunshine, the dry down presents something altogether different. In the base notes, oakmoss, with its sweetness redolent of powder and hay, is punctuated by wet roots smell of vetiver. Their classical pairing lends a somber, yet warm glow to the composition, making it unfold like some enchanted flower from the ancient myths.

The Gemme and the oils can be layered at will, as the choice of four fragrances was made keeping the potential layering combinations in mind. One should not fear wearing the oils undiluted (which cannot be said about the real essential oils), since they are already contained in the fragrance oil base. The Gemme and the oils can also be worn on their own, however I find that they are somewhat lacking in tenacity, and frequent reapplications are required.
