Issey Miyake made it clear from the onset that they were not looking for an unusual, edgy scent in keeping with their design aesthetic, and they have succeeded in creating an easy to wear perfume that is likely to have widespread appeal to fans of sweet florientals.

On a technical level, the silky duskiness of Issey Miyake is achieved not so much through the cedarwood oil, but via an overdose of Iso E Super, a material which has little smell, other than the impurity in it that presents an interplay of hues, like an iridescent coating of an oyster shell. Refracting through specific notes, Iso E Super can assume either the radiant warthm of amber, the balsamic dryness of cedarwood or the sweet darkness of violet. In Issey Miyake, Iso E Super harmonizes violet with cedar notes, allowing for the rough edges to be smoothed away, while retaining the strength of woods.

Issey Miyake is supposed to be launched in Italy this month. A reference to the classical ballet Swan Lake, used to be one of my favorite parts when I was still dancing, hence, my sentimental affection. The fragrance contains notes of lemon, sea breeze accord, apple, melon, pineapple, freesia, jasmine, cedarwood, amber and musk. I am not expecting a revolution, but hey, one can hope against hope, right?

Experiencing Issey Miyake is akin to stepping inside a dark cavernous church, where the first sensory impression is of incense. The smell of incense burning inside golden censers, embracing the stones, and creating a pale mist over the altar. The resinous richness of incense is almost overwhelming, yet suddenly as one gets used to it, the scent begins to appear as a soft comforting presence; something that retreats into the background, yet remains near.

Issey Miyake's initial notes spill into a shower of rose petals, caressing my skin and dazzling me with their opulence. Laced with chili pepper, rose casts an iridescent glow, ranging from rich crimson to pale pink.

Someone crammed against you in an elevator when you're wearing Issey Miyake won't think of perfume but will think you're still warm from your morning shower and maybe have clipped a few flowers from the garden for your desk.
