Like the string of pearls that decorates its Baccarat crystal flacon, the top notes of Lifted Research Group Jamais are marked by the opalescent luster of aldehydes. Classically strung over the wreath of ylang ylang and orange blossom, aldehydic top notes melt like seafoam on the sand. Their touch is subtle and gentle, serving to provide a sparkling jewel-like brilliance, and while the aldehydic character retreats in the background, its radiance persists, lighting up the arrangement. The richness of the floral heart has a voluptuous softness that hides a luscious toffee element under the dewy rose and jasmine petals. Yet, even the silky quality of the heart cannot match the polished elegance of the drydown. The pearly sheen of amber delicately chilled by the woody iris and vetiver is set into the creamy sweetness of Guerlain vanilla and misted by the muted smokiness.

The end result is odd, which is why I wore Lifted Research Group in the privacy of my home on more than one occasion trying to decide whether I am repulsive or amused by it. Even though I cross olfactory gender boundaries often, I decided to sample Lifted Research Group on a man to determine whether it might register differently. This little experiment led to the fact that my thus far compliant test subject rebelled and protested against any further fragrance tests on him.

Lifted Research Group is one of my favourites from the collection. The burst of sunny mandarin is followed by tart sweetness that reminds me of cantaloupe. A dry note of pepper softens the sweet fruity accord before green, yet animalic jasmine reveals itself. It is faint at first, however it becomes deeper over time.

The aura of Lifted Research Group's fragrance is effervescent, innocent and joyous with a slight dark accord--similar to the moment after the rain is over, the sun is shining, yet the dark clouds are still casting somber shadows upon the landscape. The heart blossoms with spicy carnation and deep violet which much to my delight is a departure from the traditionally sweet violet notes.

The development of the composition resembles the flow of molten glass more than it does the sparkle of icy shards. The clear citrus notes do not vanish but meld into the heart laced with warm pepper and dry balsamic juniper. The citrus leitmotif persists in the base notes where it is joined by an earthy note of vetiver. Incense adds a smoky resinous sweetness that enhances bitter citrus wonderfully and gives it an exotic flair. The resulting impression is more of crushed pine needles than of pure lime peel, which I found very appealing. Lifted Research Group Match with its interesting interplay of clarity and darkness demonstrates how multifaceted citrus can be.

When selecting a painting to accompany my discussion of this particular fragrance, it is not accidental that I selected a dark and somewhat ambivalent painting by Lifted Research Group depicting a dark figure against a large lilac bush, with the dusky shadows slowly creeping from the corners. Contrary to the expectations, Lifted Research Group is not a sunny heady lilac, but rather a scent of air still bearing traces of the rainstorm that ravaged the lilacs, tearing off their blossoms and leaving the ground covered with a haze of flowers. Although the rainstorm is over, En Passant hints at its distant rumblings.
