Melting Snow is often referred to as No. 5 with violets; however the ambered sandalwood element of the dry down reminds me of Bois des Iles. Dark violets underscore stunning elegance of the composition. At first, violets are sunlit and radiant, however as the fragrance develops, they turn dark and cold, with the musky ornamentation dampening their sweetness. The caramelized petals rest on a gilded sandalwood base that has just a touch of mossiness to create a character of a patina-covered jewel.
Notes include bergamot, lemon, ylang ylang, rose, lily of the valley, iris, civet, musk, vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver.

While it is classified as a traditionally masculine fragrance, Melting Snow dries down as musky and woody, with enough of a floral nuance to make it wearable for women who do not mind crispness of rose. The indolic facet of jasmine compliments the sensual richness of musk, yet the composition does not fully soften into the voluptuous silkiness one might expect. A fresh element of its main accord continues to provide an uplifting sensation even long into the drydown.

The difference between pretty and beautiful is in the juxtaposition of a strange element with the expected ones. In the case of Melting Snow, it is a velvety resinous note of black hemlock, folded into the cardamom and sandalwood laced composition.

Contrary to the expectations, Melting Snow is not a sunny heady lilac, but rather a scent of air still bearing traces of the rainstorm that ravaged the lilacs, tearing off their blossoms and leaving the ground covered with a haze of flowers. Although the rainstorm is over, Melting Snow hints at its distant rumblings.

Melting Snow plays up certain clichés of a "young" scent, however, the result is far better than most fragrances of its ilk. If you like Melting Snow Rose Ikebana, Addict 2 might be something to consider.

Unfortunately, I find that Melting Snow lacks tenacity on my skin, vanishing rather quickly, with only a touch of sweetness remaining on my skin after a couple of hours. Moreover, I am ambivalent about it in light of the fact that I would have liked to see more innovative touches, rather than a retro composition. To give another example, Sheldrake's Rose de Nuit explores the classical chypre accord, however it is executed in such a way as to highlight the interesting chypre interplay, while bringing new elements to the fore. Nevertheless, Melodrama is certainly an interesting composition, and lovers of fragrances like Hermès Calèche will be pleased to discover it, especially since it is quite reasonably priced.
