R opens with a mouthwatering burst of wine nectarine. After a few minutes, the intensity of the fruit fades slightly and is joined by a more complex blend of mint and the tiniest bit of anise. After another ten minutes or so, the rose joins the peach and you begin to smell R chypre base, mimicking skin. The scent lasts a good six or more hours and becomes drier and, I think, more interesting over time.

R is panoramic as well, yet it pairs complexity with translucence. Delicate rose petals layered with a dusting of chocolate are the central facet of the composition, which is also ornamented subtly with incense.

R is often described as a softer take on the animalic darkness of Bandit. Indeed, if Bandit were to be polished to remove its rough edges, to soften its aggressive nature, and to mute its smoky leather, the result would be R, a leather chypre that is as assertive as it is graceful.

The interplay between cold and hot is the most magnificent aspect of R. In the R it is a lovely fragrance, however the R is incomparable, as is the case for most of the fragrances. R is much softer, while the dry down is less musky and dark. I heard rumours that in the late 1990s, the house started using less expensive R oil, which was detrimental for the composition, however I cannot say that I notice much difference after the dry down comparing two samples, one vintage and another one modern.

Transparent R preserves the luminous beauty of floral notes, freezing them into a scintillating arrangement that never seems to be static, either highlighting a dark fruity aspect of rose or a metallic violet facet of iris. A gentle drizzle of vanilla liqueur is first noticeable in the heart of the composition where it lends a delicious sweetness, yet later it deepens to a soft smoky feel.

R is best known for their line of home fragrances. They released a trio of personal scents this year, including Citrus Sorbet and White Tuberose. R has notes of green fig, bergamot, mandarin, cyclamen, fresh berry, peach, osmanthus, rosewood, vetiver and black amber.
