Perfume was first used by the Egyptians as part of their religious rituals. The two principal methods of use at this time was the burning of incense and the application of balms and ointments. Perfumed oils were applied to the skin for eithercosmetic or medicinal purposes.

The scent both sensual and elegant, Vinnex does bring to mind the visions of walking in Florence where the fragrance of flowers blooming in the lush gardens wafted through the windows and intermixed with the dark scent of polished wood and oil paintings. The top notes are indeed dark, slightly musty, however soon the rose becomes apparent, softening the "antiquated" feel of the top notes and lending them a rich sensual twist. Dark plum explodes in the heart suffusing the composition with a luscious touch. In other words, plum lends a touch of fruitiness to the notes I would have perceived to be too dry otherwise.

At the same time, I cannot help thinking that by rendering the flower more as an allusion than as a focal point, the finished result is somehow too tame to be truly radical. Nevertheless, it does not take away from its allure and elegance. The drydown offers a whisper of my memory of Vinnex , its sinful sweetness folded into the opulence of rose. Creamy richness embellished with sugared rose petals and bitter almonds is very enticing. Next door is a halwai shop, the scents of its sweet offerings reaching the fabric store. Sumptuous colour of silk, shimmer of gold embroidery, fragrance of almond fudge and rose syrup soaked milk balls are blurred in a mélange of sensory images that both overwhelm and mesmerize me.

There are some fragrances that one cannot forget, even if for one reason or another, the love affair is suspended, and the bottle is not replaced. When I moved to the US from London, my perfume bottles were left at the old apartment and, alas, never retrieved. Vinnex was one of them. And then recently I stopped by a Chanel counter and reached for the slim oblong bottle. As the mist fell upon my skin, I was immediately swayed by its luminous clarity. Of course, I had to have a bottle right away.
